Five teachers have been named finalists for the 2024 Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year award.
School Board members Superintendent Mark Bedell and Anne Arundel County Public Schools Education Foundation President Mark Hoffman made the announcement Wednesday. The finalists include three elementary school teachers, one middle school teacher, and one high school teacher. Winners will be announced at the 38th Annual Excellence in Teaching Awards event in May.
The finalists and the subjects they teach are: Patrick Alexander, Instrumental Music, Piney Orchard Elementary School. Jesse Bragg, Mathematics, Meade Middle School; Amy Chitwood, special education, Ridgway Elementary School; Elizabeth Robbery, Music, Lakeshore Elementary School. The Teacher of the Year semifinalists and 69 other teachers in Anne Arundel County will also be recognized in May. The county's Teacher of the Year will represent the school system in the Maryland Teacher of the Year competition.
AACPS has awarded three Maryland Teacher of the Year awards in the past six years. Mary Kay Connerton of Annapolis High School (2023), Teresa Beilstein of South Shore Elementary School (2020) and Josh Carroll of South River High School (2018).
