The 18-year-old son of Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert was arrested Tuesday in Rifle, Colo., following “a series of recent vehicle break-ins and property thefts,” according to police.
The Rifle Police Department said in a Facebook post that Tyler Jay Boebert is charged with felony possession of identification, conspiracy to commit a felony, and more than 15 misdemeanors and misdemeanors.
“This is an ongoing investigation and no further information will be released at this time,” the post said. “All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
As of Wednesday morning, the Garfield County Sheriff's Office listed Tyler Boebert as an inmate in the county jail, but no bail amount or release date had been set.
Boebert's office did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment.
The Colorado Republican's son's arrest comes after trouble she faced with her ex-husband over the past year. She filed for divorce last year from her husband Jason Boebert, the father of Tyler and her three other sons. She was granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-husband this month after he threatened to harm her and entered her parents' home without permission. Her husband told The Associated Press that she went in to clean up her home in preparation for the arrival of Boebert's grandmother, and filed a restraining order to “justify” her move to her new congressional district. He said he accused her of taking advantage of the ordinance.
Boebert switched to a nearby heavily Republican Congressional district in December, avoiding a tough re-election in 2022 in a district where she narrowly defeated a Democratic challenger.
Boebert cited family issues as one of the reasons for her decision to move from the Colorado town of Silt to the new neighborhood of Windsor, calling the move “a fresh start after a pretty difficult year for me and my family.” He said it would happen.
