Easy to make, inexpensive, and requiring minimal tools, this simple home adjustment is perfect for anyone looking to add charm to a room or give older furniture a classy feel. .
To learn more about how to incorporate this trend into your home and the tools you need to do it, we spoke to DIY genius Emma Early, who shared her hacks on her Instagram Reels. She wanted to know what top designers think about this decorative interior design trend, why bobbin she trims are on the rise, and bobbin bobbin for a timeless classic look. I also asked where to use her trimmings. Here they share everything.
What is bobbin trim?
Bobbin details are a timeless trend that has been used for years to add a subtle touch that enhances the character of a room. Small wooden beads are molded together to create the impression of a string of pearls. These can be glued or nailed to furniture items to add an elegant finishing touch.
Bobbin trims on the inside of panels, as created by Emma on her Instagram reel, add a classy twist to this popular interior design trend, which can be used around door frames, windows, and to spruce up old chests of drawers. It is also commonly used. . “We love that it adds custom touches that you don’t see in most homes,” says Ashley Makuga, principal designer at Collected Interiors.
Although it can be used in more contemporary designs, adding bobbin trim to your furniture provides a decorative finish that adds timeless charm to any room. “Bobbin furniture is a recent trend that never goes out of style and that's one of the reasons I love bobbin furniture,” she wrote, posting the genius hack on her own Instagram. Emma Early says.
“Bobbin millwork and detailing has been around for a long time, and we love seeing it back,” adds Shelby Van Daly, Founder and Lead Designer at Daly Home. “We're looking forward to seeing more bobbin trim details in our projects. We think they're great at adding a timeless, classic detail.”
Typically, the bead moldings used to create the finished look are made of wood, making them a sturdy and customizable choice. You can easily paint the wood to make your beaded moldings blend seamlessly with your furniture, or use a contrasting color to make your beautiful beaded panels stand out. Also, the use of wood makes it easy to attach trimmings to furniture, adding the perfect classic touch to your simple living room DIY projects or modern kitchens.
How do you decorate with bobbin molding?
Adding bobbin trim to your furniture couldn't be easier. “It's very easy and friendly for beginner DIYers,” says Emma. If you're looking for a weekend project to spruce up your home, look no further.
All you need is some bead molding, a miter saw, some super glue or a nail gun, and some paint if you want to experiment with trimming colors. The first step is to measure the amount of bead molding you need. “The most difficult part of any panel project is determining the dimensions,” says Emma. Therefore, it is important to take your time with this step.
Next, you need to cut the trimmings to the proper proportions with a miter saw. Once you have the perfect length, apply adhesive to the back of the trim to secure it in place on your furniture. Holding the trim firmly for a few seconds will give the glue a chance to firmly secure the bobbin. If you prefer to use a nail gun, this is an easy option to securely attach the trimmings to the wall.
Once all lengths of bobbin have been applied, you can paint the bobbin to match or contrast with the rest of the furniture. Finally, it's time to stop and marvel.
Where to use bobbin trimming in your home
Paneled walls aren't the only place in your home where you can display your bobbin factory. You can consider this feature in different rooms that you want to make smart. However, the most common choice is furniture with corners, where bobbin trimming is most often carried out. Interior doors, drawer fronts, and windows are rectangular, making them ideal for this trend, which requires straight trimming.
“There are many ways to incorporate bobbin panels into your home, but a good place to start is in small spaces, such as bathroom cabinets or kitchenette cabinets,” advises Shelby. Rectangular furniture has a strong appearance, but it is beautifully softened by the rounded nature of the bobbin trimmings.
“If you're looking for a traditional cottage look, bobbin panels are a fun way to dress up your cabinets,” agrees Amy Youngblood of Amy Youngblood Interiors. Starting with small pieces of furniture, such as cabinets, allows you to incorporate elegant, traditional design features into your home without overwhelming the room.
“We're really into specialty wood trim right now, but this is definitely a broader macro trend,” Ashley says. “We are currently planning to use the bobbin pieces as panel accents in the girls' room.” Using bobbin trim in a child's room can add a playful and delicate touch to the room. “I love the idea of running a wide bobbin strip under the dado rail in her daughter's bedroom,” says Emma.
