February 26, 2024
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Even after a busy offseason, the Dodgers weren't quite done making moves toward their 2024 roster.
On Monday, the Dodgers traded veteran outfielder Manuel Margot and prospect Lane Donkong to the Twins for shortstop Noah Miller, who was ranked as the No. 23 prospect in the Twins' system.
Margot's departure to Minnesota ultimately opened the door for the Dodgers to re-sign fan favorite Quique Hernandez on a one-year, $4 million deal to play a super-utility role. Both transfers were officially announced by the club on Monday afternoon.
“We've had a lot of different conversations and the ability to bring Kike back and get all those guys up in time gives us another layer of versatility,” Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomez said. Only,” he said. “Obviously, Manny is still very fit. Kike, we felt a little bit better fit and we also know what he brings to the clubhouse come postseason time and hopefully. .”
The Dodgers acquired Margot from the Rays in December in the same deal that brought Tyler Glasnow to Los Angeles. The Dodgers are scheduled to pay Margot $10 million in 2024, and there was always a chance the club could trade the veteran outfielder before the start of the season.
At some point in the offseason, the Dodgers held trade talks with the Red Sox that could have sent Margot to Boston in exchange for longtime Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen. Sources told MLB.com that those discussions never progressed past the early stages and quickly entered the process.
As for Hernandez, he gives the Dodgers another right-handed option off the bench against a left-handed pitcher. Hernandez played a key role in the Dodgers' World Series victory in 2020 before being traded to the Red Sox in free agency. However, at the last trade deadline, the Dodgers made a move to sign the ultra-utility man, making it a nice reunion for both sides.
This offseason, the Dodgers and Hernandez were in constant communication and there was always mutual interest. However, the Dodgers began to run out of room on their roster to accommodate Hernandez. A report in The Athletic on Sunday suggested Hernandez was being targeted to the Padres, Angels, Giants and Yankees. However, once the Dodgers became interested in Margot, a deal for Hernandez came together quickly.
“We've been in touch with Kike at various points throughout the offseason, and there's been mutual interest all along. But obviously, there were challenges with the way we built our team. Minnesota We were able to line up a contract with Kike, which freed up a spot for Kike, and we were able to get it done.”
Hernandez, who underwent sports hernia surgery this winter but is expected to be ready for the season opener in Seoul, South Korea, gives the Dodgers infield depth. He has the ability to play anywhere on the diamond, including serving as a backup first baseman behind Freddie Freeman. But perhaps most importantly, Hernandez can help give James Outman a few days off in center field against left-handed pitchers.
In 54 games with the Dodgers last season, Hernandez improved significantly at the plate, hitting five home runs and posting a .731 OPS. Prior to that, Hernandez appeared in 86 games with the Red Sox, hitting just six home runs and posting a .599 OPS.
“How do we help the team and how does that work with the clubhouse and how does that work with the dynamics of what will be there from hopefully the stretch run into the playoffs? “I think we were very focused on that. And we know what Kiké does in the game, 'that front,'” Gomez said. “That was the driving force.”
