The HMD, or should I say Human Mobile World Devices, Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 proceedings begin with a “series” of big announcements, none of which you can actually see at the moment. It's all in the works and coming later “this summer,” as they say.
The most important part, the future of Nokia phones, remains vague, even though HMD promises to continue manufacturing and selling phones (how long that will be is a question). In fact, the company hinted at the return of Nokia's iconic device back in May, and although it was barely shared on stage, it also appears to be a retro feature phone.
Speaking of retro, HMD is also teaming up with Mattel to launch a Barbie-themed flip phone in July. The color is apparently “pink” and the exact hardware hasn't been revealed, but don't get your hopes up considering it could be a foldable or even a smartphone for that matter. HMD makes it abundantly clear that it's feature phone bundle style and nostalgia, and is entirely focused on “digital detox.”
HMD is a strong proponent of smartphone repairability, and this year it plans to take it to the next level, “drastically reducing the steps required to repair a screen,” and will also bring its own branded smartphones to market. It is scheduled to start being introduced.
