Friday at the Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper. Sen. Mark R. Warner and Sen. Tim Kaine (both Democrats from Virginia) are sponsoring the Virginia Community College Education Foundation to improve early childhood education programs and support educational access and success for Virginia's foster youth. donated $2,428,000 in federal funds.
The funding, secured by Sens. Warner and Kaine as part of the 2023 government spending bill, includes $105,000 to support two programs at Germanna Community College. The Great Expectations program helps young people aging out of the system complete their education and transition to independent living.
Warner and Cain tried out a heavy equipment simulator at the Daniel Center. The simulator trains German students for high-paying jobs improving Virginia's road infrastructure, serving thousands of students. Portions from the Great Expectations program are also included to support education in core technology, electrical, heavy equipment operations, automotive technician, and general studies.

“From this practical experience, I have to say that our community colleges are doing an extraordinary job of training Virginians,” said Professor Warner.
Mr. Cain, Mr. Warner, Virginia Community College President Dr. David Dore, Germana President Janet Gullikson, and Culpeper Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Amy Frazier are among the beneficiaries of these programs. I participated in a roundtable discussion with GCC students.

Taylor Landry, Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives at Germanna Schools, said Great Expectations Germanna students will receive $3,000 scholarships from the grant to support their transition to education and independence. He said he could receive the money. She said the fund will support up to 200 of her GE students across the state on a first-come, first-served basis.
Research shows that older youth who leave the foster care system at age 18 are at higher risk of homelessness and incarceration than their peers.
The Great Expectations program began in 2008 with a challenge grant from the Freed family. The program began by serving students at five colleges and now supports youth development at all 23 community colleges in Virginia, reaching thousands of youth who are aging out of the system. We support students in their transition to university and independence.
