For two days in a row, we'll be hosting sensational DIY projects centered around hockey-themed tree ornaments. Yesterday's project came from the great Wafflebored and today's project comes from our reader Tim Merkley.
A quick background: In 2016, Tim wrote a post about how he made mitten-shaped Christmas tree ornaments with a design based on hockey jerseys and got autographs on the back of each from the players who wore the jerseys. I guest wrote this. (Be sure to read Tim's post from 2016, which is very nice and explains the background of the project. It gives you a better idea of what he is trying to show with this new post.) You can understand it well.)
Tim recently contacted me again to let me know about two particularly noteworthy developments in his mitten decoration project. Pass the baton to him and let him talk about it.
sweater mittens that glow in the dark
Written by Tim Markley
When the Las Vegas Golden Knights released their reverse retro jerseys with glow-in-the-dark lettering in 2022, we knew we had to find a way to recreate that effect in the form of sweater mittens.
However, it turned out to be more difficult than expected. Since glowing felt doesn't actually exist, I quickly discovered that I needed to apply luminous paint to the felt myself to achieve the desired result. While green and blue paints were relatively easy to obtain, it was very difficult to find paints that glowed deep red in the dark and appeared red under normal light. The red luminescent paint I found had a pinkish color in normal light, which was not suitable.
After much experimentation, I finally found that mixing red glow powder pigment with red acrylic paint produced a satisfying red color in both daylight and darkness. The finished product, which took at least a year from planning to completion, is probably my favorite mitten I've ever made.
As for the signature on the back, I already had a cardboard base signed by Knights player Phil Kessel, so I used that.
I also recently completed another mitten-related project that Uni Watch readers may enjoy. As you probably know, the six Sutter brothers (Brian, Darryl, Duane, Brent, Rich, and Ron) all played in his NHL in the 1980s, and some of them also became his NHL coaches and his GM. I did. I got my first autograph from Brent Sutter all the way back in 2005, and six months later I got Darryl's autograph. After getting Ron's autograph in 2017, I realized that I might be able to get all six of my siblings to sign and make matching mittens.
It was relatively easy to get Duane and Rich's autographs, but Brian doesn't really like signing autographs anymore. I found out he coaches a senior AAA hockey team in Alberta and had his email address, so I gave it a try. An employee of the team agreed to help me and eventually got Brian's autograph.
For the front of each mitten, we decided to feature the jersey each brother wore during the 1986-1987 season, as shown below.
- Brian Sutter: Bruce Home (with a “C” for captain)
- Darryl Sutter: Chicago Road (with “C” for Captain)
- Duane Sutter: Islander Homeland
- Brent Sutter: Islanders Road
- Ron Sutter: Take the flyer home.
- Rich Sutter: Home to Canucks
The front and back of the completed mittens are as follows.

Paul, I'm here. To be honest, I had completely forgotten about this project until Tim contacted me a few days ago. We would like to thank him for once again sharing his creativity with us.

Membership renewal
Ordering membership cards is rare these days, but I recently received one from reader Bob Hudson. He wanted the Cowboys helmet motif, but with a twist. On November 4, 2019, the NFL commemorated his 150th anniversary of the first college football game by allowing Cowboys and Giants players to wear his decals on the rear helmets featuring their university logos. attended. Bob wanted that kind of treatment on his membership card, which had the logo of his alma mater, Murray State University. We've made a lot of cards based on Cowboys helmets over the years, but this is the first time we've asked for a college decal. Fun choice, Bob!
If you want a cool Christmas gift, you can buy a membership gift voucher and redeem it at any time by your lucky recipient. And if you order your membership card today or tomorrow, card designer Scott MX Turner says he expects the design to be completed in time for the holidays, but you won't receive your printed/laminated card until a little later. It says that it will be.
As always, you can sign up for your own custom designed card here , see all the cards I've ever designed (currently over 3,300!) here , and see how to create your own card here I can.
today's canned food
Who would have thought that cherry sauce could be so similar to salami? Hearing this immediately reminded me of the classic “Mommy, I'm Broken, Mommy, Broken” scene from the Bart vs. Thanksgiving episode. The Simpsons:
