Is it essential for an author to have a website? If so, where should I start? I have no idea. Can anyone give me some advice?
Required? No
Is it another tool/mechanism for disseminating an author's work? Indeed.
Authors are looking to make sales, and the only way to make sales is for people to know about their work. The days of publishers and publicists doing all the press releases and other book promotion are mostly over. With self-publishing and other options replacing the traditional marketplace, it's up to the author to get their name out there before they sign a big deal. And I would guess that the first thing most publicists do when they sign an author is to make sure the author is active online.
I'm really curious who would think to enforce something like that.
Having a website as an author isn't required, but it can be a huge benefit in growing your brand and engaging with your readers. You can get started with platforms like WordPress or Squarespace, which are easy to use and have designs made specifically for authors. Focus on a simple design, showcasing your work, including your bio, and making it easy for people to contact you or buy your books. Continually update with new content to keep your readers interested.
