The AIFF has begun contacting coaches to schedule interviews for the head coaching role.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has begun informing the coaching staff, selected from the 291 who applied for the vacant national team positions. Acting general secretary M Sathyanarayan confirmed the development through an email seeking further information from the candidates.
The purpose of the email is to gather more information to “make an informed decision before moving forward with the next stage of the selection process.” Specifically, AIFF is asking about your continued interest in the position, salary expectations including benefits, expected start date, and any other preferences.
Sources close to the federation say at least 12 coaches have been contacted, including two who have had huge success in the Indian Super League (ISL), Antonio Lopez Habas and Manolo Marquez, while inquiries have also been made about Park Hang-seo, who was instrumental in Vietnam's run to the AFC Asian Cup quarter-finals.
“There is a growing sentiment within the AIFF that the next coach should have a strong understanding of Indian football,” the Times of India reported, adding, “Manolo and Habas have extensive experience in India, which will give them an advantage.”
Their track record here is undeniable, but salary prospects may be a concern given possible compensation payments to former coach Igor Stimac following the release of his contract.”
Habas is the ISL's most decorated manager, having won two titles (with Atletico de Kolkata and ATK) and the League Shield (with Mohun Bagan) and has overseen the most games in the league (110), while Manolo has transformed Hyderabad FC from bottom of the table to ISL champions in 2022, and has also produced several international players.
The AIFF is concerned about possible compensation for former coach Igor Stimac following his release from his contract and is mindful of his salary projections during negotiations.
This targeted approach comes following the sacking of Stimac after the team's failure to reach the third round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The AIFF had previously called for applications from coaches with extensive experience at senior and elite youth level.
